CUPW originally contracted with Cape Breton’s SpeciaLink: The National Centre for Child Care Inclusion, for the day-to-day operation of the Special Needs Project.  Executive Director Dr. Sharon Hope Irwin was one of two principal authors of the union’s study of working parents of children with special needs. When she decided to put more of her energies into research and development, she helped the union find a new home for the project.

Today, the Special Needs Project is administered by the Breton Ability Centre, situated in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Three full-time staff work on the Special Needs Project in an office in Baddeck, about 100 kilometres away.
